John Robertson: My Edinburgh
12th Jul 2016
We caught up with the man behind 4 million YouTube hits for his smash-hit, The Dark Room, to hear all about his plans while he's in Edinburgh for the Fringe. See his show at Underbelly's White Belly at Cowgate from 4 - 27 August.
Have you performed at the Fringe before?
Yep! Stand-up shows every year since 2010 – and it’s Dark Room’s FIFTH FABULOUS YEAR. A show about videogames that’s essentially a screaming bloke with a torch under his chin has lasted five years. Isn’t that wonderful? And also everything that’s great and wrong about arts festivals at the same time?
Where’s your favourite spot in Edinburgh?
Underneath my wife. You probably can’t come; it’s a pretty exclusive club.
What will you be packing in your suitcase for the Fringe?
90% of my case is Dark Room equipment. It used to just be me with a torch, now I’ve got colossal boots, customised spiked armour, leather trousers and a sexy leather corset. It’s heavy enough that when I fly on planes I can fit maybe one pair of underpants in there before I have to pay extra.
Do you know who Greyfriars Bobby is?
He was a Chuckle Brothers character, wasn’t he?
What’s the best show you’ve ever seen at the Fringe?
Don’t You Know Who I Am? The Greyfriars Bobby Story
What’s the best piece of advice you’d give (or have been given) about the Fringe?
Once you ignore all the guff about sensible shoes and nutrition and “taking a punt on unknown shows”, the best chippie is Zara, down on Cowgate. Go get a pizza and some chips and cheese and tell the guy John Robertson sent you. I visit there every year. Beautiful stuff.
To ceilidh or not to ceilidh?
… I… I don’t know what you’re asking.
What can audiences expect from your show?
The fifth year of the world’s only live-action videogame. Bigger budget, better graphics, same strange jokes, more shouting.
