Shlomo: My Edinburgh

4th Jul 2016

We caught up with Shlomo, beatbox extraordinaire, to learn more about his favourite things about Edinburgh. We're delighted he's performing two shows with us at this year's Fringe: Shlomo's Beatbox Adventure for Kids and #NewRules.

Have you performed at the Fringe before?

Yes, the Fringe is where I feel most at home as a performer. I LOVE it.

Where’s your favourite spot in Edinburgh?

I have love the Underbelly Cowgate. I've had some incredible moments onstage there.

What will you be packing in your suitcase for the Fringe?

My onstage kit is pretty bulky so it doesn't leave room for much more than a pair of pants and a toothbrush

Do you know who Greyfriars Bobby is?

I do now!

What’s the best show you’ve ever seen at the Fringe?

Gecko - Missing was totally stunning. The best show I was involved in was Winshlo where I collaborated with my childhood hero Michael Winslow. I was pinching myself throughout

What’s the best piece of advice you’d give (or have been given) about the Fringe?

Pace yourself!

To ceilidh or not to ceilidh?

Every time.

What can audiences expect from your show?

I'm doing two shows - one is my "beatbox adventure for kids" which is beatbox fun for all the family - I take the audience on a time travelling journey back to the early 80s to witness the birth of hip hop on the streets of New York, and get everyone making beatbox noises with their voices. In the evening I'm performing my solo show #NewRules which showcases "Beast" the looping machine I've created by coding my own software. Together, Beast and I become a one man rave and we'll spend the evening celebrating my favourite music in a beatbox style.

See both Shlomo's shows at Underbelly's Cowgate venue in Belly Dancer on 15 and 16 August
