Venue Preview: Cowgate

27th Jul 2014

With only three days to go until it all kicks off here in Edinburgh, all things Underbelly are beginning to take shape! As ever, we've been painting the town purple in preparation for the biggest arts festival in the world...

Underbelly began its life at the Fringe as a small venue in the vaults below the central library of Edinburgh on Cowgate in 2001. While we now operate several moo-vellous venues across Edinburgh including the iconic Udderbelly at Bristo Square (more on that tomorrow!), Cowgate remains at the heart of our Fringe activity. With its atmospheric caves and brilliant bars, it truly encapsulates the spirit of the Fringe! Here's a behind the scenes peak at the work we've been doing to create, once again, the quintessential Fringe venue...

Not quite a cow head yet... but soon the top entrance on Victoria Street will become beautifully bovine!

The cow crew prepare the bottom entrance on Cowgate Lane.

Preparing the Belly Dancer for Spank! You love it...

The Beer Belly bar

Soon this will become the beautiful Cow Cafe - your one-stop-shop for free entertainment this Fringe!

Perhaps the most exotic room in the whole of Edinburgh... (until you go inside)

White Belly: performer's-eye view. We'll probably add some chairs though.

Things are (just about) starting to come together in the box office. This is where you'll be able to buy tickets to all of our moo-vellous shows!

Ghosts of Fringes past on the spiral staircase - about to be re-covered!

One of the things that gives Cowgate its mysterious allure is random little spaces like this. We call them the catacombs. What's inside? Who knows...
